First (& Second) Impressions on Acupressure from a First (& Second) Timer

After a very brief skimming of internet research on acupressure, I assumed I’d leave my first session as supple as oven-fresh brie (and a stress case like myself can always benefit from a little chilling out). Surprisingly, however, my first session was a mix of feelings. I was a little nervous from not knowing exactly what to expect (I’m a control freak), mildly uncomfortable with being lightly touched (I’m into personal space), briefly embarrassed with having to ask to go to the bathroom in the middle of the session (luckily, this is very common), and after the session, I felt mixture of, yes, some physical relaxation but also an emotional hypersensitivity resulting in a ravenous craving for an In-N-Out cheeseburger.

Not quite what I expected from a centuries-old healing art.

Over the next few days, I thought about what might have happened. I certainly didn’t want to write a less-than-stellar review of a friend’s profession, especially based on only one session. I have total faith in Antoinette’s talents, and her Qigong classes have turned a skeptic like myself into a believer that moving very, very slowly somehow leads to peace of mind (I don’t really care why it works; I just know it works for me). Qigong reversed twenty years of depression for me when all the conventional methods failed, so why was I not melting on a cloud after my first acupressure session?

Antoinette said it’s common for people to experience what I did after a first session (I didn’t mention the cheeseburger), so I asked if we could try again. I wanted to see if my reservations against all things new and different were clouding my perceptions. If I could just halt my racing thoughts for a bit and relax, a gentle master like Antoinette could probably crumble a tough cookie like me.

And crumble me she did.

The second session was the muscle/mind melting I’d hoped for. It was infinitely easier to relax the second time since I knew what was going to happen. Again, I don’t care much why or how it worked, but Antoinette worked wonders on my anxiety and muscle tension. My muscles felt loose but strong (even my neck, which feels like stone most of the time), and my mind felt emotionally calm but still alert (and no road rage or junk food on the way home!).

Everyone’s experience is probably unique, but I’m extremely glad I went back and didn’t write off acupressure the first time. Antoinette is an amazing friend and healer, and I highly recommend her services, especially if you’re a high-strung skeptic like myself. If you’re hesitant and have questions, don’t be afraid to ask Antoinette (she’s very sweet and knows her stuff). And if your first session doesn’t go as well as you’d like it to, skip the drive thru, and just schedule a second. Acupressure is better than cheeseburgers. There, I said it.
